I filed bankruptcy and can't open a bank account!

I filed bankruptcy. I now want to open a new bank account but can't because "Chex Systems" has me listed as having an overdrawn bank account. Why did this happen and what can I do?

It happened because you or your attorney didn't list Chex Systems in your bankruptcy filing. If they had been listed, they would have had to remove you from their "bad list" which banks subscribe to. You can fix this by faxing the following items to Chex Systems at 602-659-2197.

- A letter with your Social Security Number and a demand that they remove any negative information about you from their report.

- If your bankruptcy case is still in progress, include a copy of the "Notice of Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Case" sent to you by the court or your attorney.

- If you've received your discharge of debts in your bankruptcy case, include a copy of the "Discharge of Debtor" document that was sent to you by the court or your attorney.

Chex Systems should send you an acknowledgment within a few or several days and then your bank overdraft information should be gone from their report.
